One thing I'd love to see explored more is why 2008-2016 is so formative for Democrats, almost to the point of being the entire identity.

The ethos of that era was almost entirely reactive. Two massive crises handed to them, and the defining move was just being the adults in the room. And I think that pattern actually holds across Democratic golden ages: FDR, JFK, Obama all became exceptional because the moment demanded it. The crisis came first, the hero second.

Republican golden ages look different. Reagan and Trump are both clearly personality-first. Reaganism was built around Reagan, the ideology crystallized after the man, not before. The cult precedes the cause.

Which gets to the core Democratic problem right now. Democrats are at their best when the environment is legible, with a clear crisis and a clearly defined villain. 2008 had all of that. What they're attempting now is to make Trumpism the villain and run the same play. But the conditions aren't the same. The Republican party is less unified, Trumpism as an ideology is diffuse, and more importantly, Trump's ideology isn't actually what's putting pressure on most Americans' lives. It's cost of living, housing, basic needs.

Just being the anti-Trump isn't a hero's story.
